Round-leaved Sundew  (茅膏菜)

Pitcher-plant

Poision Ivy

Poison Ivy (野葛; 櫟葉毒漆樹)

It is a woody vine that is well known for its ability to produce urushiol, a skin irritant that causes an itching rash for most people.

The reaction caused by poison ivy, urushiol-induced contact dermatitis, is an allergic reaction. Some people simply do not have an allergy to urushiol. Around 15%[1] to 30%[2] of people are immune to the effects; however, sensitivity can develop over time with repeated exposure. For those who are affected by urushiol, it causes a very irritating rash. In extreme cases, corticosteroids can be needed to treat rashes and severe itching. The first symptom of contact is a severe itching of the skin that develops into reddish colored inflammation or non-colored bumps, and then blistering of the skin occurs. In severe cases, clear fluids ooze from open blistered sores. Once the urushiol poison has had contact with the skin

A cicada is an insect with big eyes wide apart on the head and usually transparent, well-veined wings. There are approximately 2,500 species of cicada around the globe, and many remain unclassified. Cicadas live in temperate to tropical climates where they are one of the most widely recognized of all insects, mainly due to their large size and remarkable (and often inescapable) acoustic talents. Cicadas are sometimes called "locusts", although they are unrelated to true locusts, which are a kind of grasshopper. Cicadas are related to leafhoppers and spittlebugs.

Cicadas do not bite or sting, are benign to humans, and are not considered a pest. Many people around the world regularly complement their standard diet with cicadas: the female is prized for eating as it is meatier. Cicadas have been eaten (or are still eaten) in Ancient Greece, China, Malaysia, Burma, Australia, Latin America and the Congo. Cicadas are employed in the traditional medicines of China and Japan for hearing-related matters.

 Cut-leaved Toothwort (齒鱗草)

(Chicory)

Chicory is a bushy perennial herb with blue flowers. Originating from Europe, it was naturalized in North America, where it has become a roadside weed. The roots are baked, ground, and used as a coffee substitute and additive in the plant's Mediterranean region of origin, although its use as a coffee additive is still very popular in the American South, particularly in New Orleans. Chicory, with sugar beet and rye was used as an ingredient of the East German Mischkaffee (mixed coffee), introduced during the 'coffee crisis' of 1976-9

Chicory's leaves are still used today in typical Roman recipes: it's common in Roman restaurants to eat dishes with boiled chicory leaves, olive oil and lemon juice (fried with garlic and red pepper). The plant is very common in the Roman countryside and is often picked up by farmers; recently greengrocers introduced a cultivated variety of the plant, which is bigger and has longer leaves.

Golden Rod

(Goldenrod)

One of the last big flower shows each year is provided by the goldenrods.  Within Kansas 12 species are known with several varieties.  They are all perennials with large clusters of small yellow flowers that appear from the end of summer until frost.  The leaves of goldenrods are simple, lance or egg shaped and usually have a toothed margin.   Most species propagate by a spreading root system in addition to seed.  They can be a troublesome addition to a wildflower garden for that reason.   They become more common in pastures under heavy grazing pressure and so are used as an indicator species by range managers.

Just about every insect with an interest in flowers may by found on goldenrod in autumn.  The predators of those insects will be found there also.   Wheel bugs and flower crab spiders, in particular, like to lay in wait for prey on goldenrod clusters.

Milk Weed

Milkweed (Butterfly flower, Silkweed, Silky Swallow-wort) is native to most of North America east of the Rockies, with the exception of the drier parts of the Prairies. It grows in sandy soils and appreciates lots of sunlight.

Common milkweed is a herbaceous perennial plant growing from a rhizome to 1-2 m tall. The stem is very hairy, and all parts of the plants produce a white latex when broken. The leaves are opposite, simple broad ovate-lanceolate, 7-25 cm long and 3-12 cm broad, usually with an undulate margin and a red-colored main vein. They have a very short petiole and a velvety underside.

Uses

The plant's latex contains large quantities of glycosides, making the leaves and pod bark toxic for sheep, and potentially humans (though large quantities of the foul-tasting parts would need to be eaten). However, the young shoots, young leaves, flower buds and fresh fruits are all edible.

 Purple Loosestrife (紫色馬鞭草)

NATIVE RANGE

Eurasia; throughout Great Britain, and across central and southern Europe to central Russia, Japan, Manchuria China, southeast Asia and northern India

ECOLOGICAL THREAT

Purple loosestrife adapts readily to natural and disturbed wetlands. As it establishes and expands, it outcompetes and replaces native grasses, sedges, and other flowering plants that provide a higher quality source of nutrition for wildlife. The highly invasive nature of purple loosestrife allows it to form dense, homogeneous stands that restrict native wetland plant species, including some federally endangered orchids, and reduce habitat for waterfowl.

Purple Loosestrife

Queen Anne's Lace

 Queen anne's lace (安妮皇后的蕾絲)

Queen anne's lace (Daucus carota) is a flowering plant native to temperate regions of Europe and southwest Asia.

Daucus carota is a variable biennial plant, usually growing up to 1 m tall and flowering from June to August. The umbels are claret-coloured or pale pink before they open, then bright white and rounded when in full flower, measuring 3-7cm wide with a festoon of bracts beneath; finally, as they turn to seed, they contract and become concave like a bird's nest. This has given the plant its British common or vernacular name, Bird's Nest. Very similar in appearance to the deadly poison hemlock, it is distinguished by a mix of bi-pinnate and tri-pinnate leaves, fine hairs on its stems and leaves, a root that smells like carrots.

Women have used the seeds from queen anne's lace, for centuries as a contraceptive, the earliest written reference dates back to the late 5th or 4th century B.C.  "The seeds, harvested in the fall, are a strong contraceptive if taken orally immediately after coitus.

White Trout Lily (白色鱒魚百合)

 Christmas Fern (聖誕蕨)

Christmas fern stays green all winter; the fronds were formerly used for Christmas decorations. It is common and easy to identify from the shape of the fronds.

• Family: Dryopteridaceae

• Habitat: rich woods and open woods

• Height: fronds 2-3 feet long

• Location of spores: spores on undersides of leaflets

• Stipe (leaf stalk): stout, shallowly-grooved, with dense light-brown scales. leaflets dark green, shiny

• Growth pattern: asymmetric clump

• Persistence: evergreen

Trillium Red

Red Pine

  Red Pine (二葉松,紅松)

The red pine (Pinus resinosa) is a pine native to northeastern North America, occurring from Newfoundland west to southeast Manitoba, and south to northern Illinois and Pennsylvania, with a small outlying population in the Appalachian Mountains in West Virginia.

It is an evergreen tree characterized by tall, straight growth in a variety of habitats. It usually ranges from 20-35 m in height and 1 m in trunk diameter, but can exceed that in optimal conditions, exceptionally reaching 43 m tall (Gymnosperm Database). The crown is conical in young trees, becoming a narrow rounded dome with age. The bark is thick and gray-brown at the base of the tree, but thin, flaky and bright orange-red in the upper crown; the tree's name derives from this distinctive character. Some red color may be seen in the fissures of the bark. Red Pine is self pruning; there tend not to be dead branches on the trees, and older trees may have very long lengths of branchless trunk below the canopy.

 Common Blue Violet (紫羅蘭)
